(The platform section is under construction and always will be, as it needs to reflect the people of Wisconsin in the light of a rapidly changing world and not just the opinions of myself or of a small group of people. So if you think we should change something on here, say something!)
The platform really is pretty simple. Here is a high level summary for each area. If you want more details, click on the underlined title of each section.
We have to start with taking back our government, for it is government that determines what the rules of our society are. It is how we have conversations and how we decide. And all too often those conversations and those decisions are not about what is best for all of us, but instead are about what is best for a privileged few. This is because our government isn't representing us, instead it represents special interest groups, insiders, and the wealthy. That must change. Here is how we start fixing this.
1. It all starts with you. You must educate yourself and participate in our elections, in our community, and in our government. After all, the root word in Democracy is demos, which means "the people". If you aren't involved, we don't have a democracy.
2. We must reform our elections by getting the money out of politics. It corrupts the entire process. Second, we need to get more people participating. Voting is a right and we should make it easier for people to participate, not harder. And third, we need to find better ways to have our voices heard. Our current system of defining voting districts is set up to be manipulated to ensure controlling representation by those who draw the maps, even if they don't get a majority of the votes.
In addition to cleaning up our election process, we must also cleanup the rules by which we run our government. It is about servant leadership, not about leading to serve ones own self interest or a narrow special interest group.
3. Pass it on. This knowledge is meant to be shared. Only by educating yourself and others in your life can we hope to reach the number of people we need to in order to fix it. You're not going to hear this information from Democrats or Republicans. You're not going to hear it on the evening news or read about it in the papers. Those insiders don't want you to know this stuff, they want you to not pay attention, to think it's too hard or too complicated. It's not. It's right there for us. You only have to decide what what you are going to do, stay asleep or WAKE UP!
We'll do this by fixing the broken things in our society. This includes rebuilding our core infrastructure while being fiscally responsible and protecting our environment and natural resources for future generations.
Right now, I have a short story in this section. I'll be adding quite a bit more about what it means to "Leave it better than you found it". But for me, this is the hard stuff that we all know we should do, but we don't even talk about. It is about how we have blown by the carrying capacity of this planet and are now living in a completely unsustainable way.
Really. It isn't as hard as we make things out to be. Let's all agree not to fall for the distraction of hot button divisive issues that our current politicians and media feed to us. Instead treat each other with respect and let's get a fresh start from the common ground we all share.
Being kind may seem overly simplistic and perhaps naïve to most people, especially when it comes to politics. But I don't think so. I have a lot of faith in humanity. After all, what parent doesn't teach their child to be kind. And if it is something we teach our children, it is something we should be able to live by as well.
